Haridwar: Baba Ramdev began Tuesday in a more forgiving state of mind than he has been ever since the government dismantled his camp in Delhi late on Saturday night. The yoga icon, who has been furious over the last two days, struck a more benign note when he said he "forgave" the Prime Minister and his government.

He made clear, however, that the "forgiveness" was at a personal level. "I forgive the PM and government for atrocities and wrongs done to me...but for destroying democracy, the nation will have to decide."

Recent riots in China seems to have shaken the Communist government. According to the police, women wearing long, black Islamic robes and head scarves acted as ringleaders in the July 5 ethnic unrest in western Xinjiang, state media reported Monday.

The top legislator from riot-hit Xinjiang has said that authorities would speed up local legislation against separatism in the western region that has a long-running independence movement by minority Uighurs. China already has a national law against secession, though there are no similar regional laws.

China faced its worst unrest in decades this month when tensions between the dominant Han Chinese and the Turkic-speaking, Muslim Uighurs descended into violence in the regional capital of Urumqi. Nearly 200 people died in the unrest.
Witnesses and surveillance footage captured the presence of young women wearing white, black, and brown robes with head scarves, along with young men in blue T-shirts, involved in the riot, with the women inciting the violence while the men carried it out.

According to reports, the violence began when police in Urumqi intervened at a peaceful protest by Uighurs, who went on a rampage, smashing windows, burning cars and beating Han Chinese. Two days later, vigilante groups of Han took to the streets and attacked Uighurs.

The Chinese government has blamed the July 5 riots on "three forces" — extremism, separatism, and terrorism — both at home and abroad.
Meanwhile terrorist group Al Qaeda is also reportedly planning to take revenge for the riots.

Oil prices rebound in post-Christmas trade

SINGAPORE - World oil prices rebounded in Asian trade on Friday after tumbling to four-year lows before the Christmas break, with economic gloom weighing on the market, analysts said.

New York's main contract, light sweet crude for February delivery, rose 93 cents to 36.28 dollars a barrel after closing down 3.63 dollars at 35.35 in US trade on Wednesday.

Brent North Sea crude for February delivery rose 1.04 dollars to 37.65 dollars. In London the contract settled on Wednesday 3.75 dollars lower at 36.61 dollars, its lowest since July 2004.

After taking a one-day trading break for Christmas, oil reopened higher on Friday partly because of technical factors, said Ken Hasegawa, manager of the energy desk at Newedge Japan brokerage.

"After a sharp drop in sentiment on Wednesday, before the holidays, today (there is) a slight technical rebound," he said from Tokyo.

Another factor boosting prices was the US government's latest weekly report on crude stockpiles in the world's largest energy consumer, Hasegawa said.

The Energy Information Administration (EIA) report, released Wednesday, showed US crude inventories sank 3.1 million barrels in the week ending December 19. The drop was far heavier than market expectations.

The EIA added that crude reserves were 9.1 percent higher than at the same stage last year.

Analysts said that recent US data showing that the world's biggest economy remains in a recession were likely to keep crude oil prices under pressure in the immediate term.

A sharp global economic downturn that has slashed the world's demand for energy has led the price of crude oil to collapse by about 75 percent since hitting record highs above 147 dollars per barrel in July.

Oil markets are pricing in a continued decline in economic activity despite efforts by governments around the world to stimulate activity, MF Global energy analyst John Kilduff said.

A Pakistani lawyer has praised the actions of the Iraqi journalist who threw his shoes at US President George W. Bush at a press conference.

Muntadhar al-Zaidi, an al-Baghdadiya TV correspondent, shocked the world by hurling his shoes at President Bush in Baghdad on Sunday.

Mian Muhibullah Kakakhel said that the action showed how much the international community hates the outgoing US president.

Kakakhel, as a senior advocate to the Supreme Court of Pakistan, also said he is ready to safeguard the shoes.

Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez had earlier hailed the reporter as a role model for courageousness.

"It's a good thing it didn't hit him. I'm not encouraging throwing shoes at anybody, but really, what courage," said Chavez.

A wealthy Saudi Arabian national has offered $10 million to buy just one of the two famous black dress shoes.

Al-Zaidi is reportedly scheduled to appear before the Iraqi Central Criminal Court on Wednesday.

Educators to state: Make money, your mouth meet

When Florida lawmakers say they care about the state’s children, the president of the state school superintendents association has a quick reply:

“You lie.”

That kind of bold talk is needed, said association president Joe Joyner, in a state that pays the least in the country for its students’ education.

He was speaking Thursday at a meeting of school superintendents, school board members and other education leaders from across Florida. The Tampa gathering was called, in part, to come up with ways to deal with budget woes — or at least prevent them from getting worse next school year.

For starters, the educators said, the state needs to relax its mandates. That’s timely, for Florida is scheduled to implement the strictest phase of its class-size reduction law next school year.

Also in the works: a requirement to provide for physical education time for middle school students and the creation of district-run virtual schools -- online classes for students from kindergarten through 12th grade.

“The district is at the edge of a cliff,” Broward schools Superintendent Jim Notter said. “Allow me to spend the meager dollars that I have on my needs.”

But it’s going to take more than educators and lobbyists to get the message across to Tallahassee: Parents and businesses are going to be recruited to the cause. Some have already signed up.

Colleen Wood, of St. Johns County in northeast Florida, created a group called 50th No More — refering to Florida’s rank on student spending compared to other states.

‘Angry moms’

“What’s going to change the state of education in Florida is angry moms. Who’s going to say every child doesn’t deserve a quality education?” Wood told a group of people hoping to channel her energy. “My husband calls us the Mommy Mafia.”

She and other education advocates acknowledge that the state’s shrinking budget means there is not likely to be any additional investment in public schools. But it still should be legislators’ top priority this spring.

“They need to recognize education as the paramount priority, whatever size the pie is,” Wood said.

School districts are expecting to lose even more money when legislators reconvene in the spring to write next year’s budget. One budget director said school districts should prepare for budgets that would provide about the same as they received for the 2005-06 school year. Additional cuts could come sooner.

Those cuts will be on top of what they’ve already lost over the last 18 months.

No good option

“To go beyond these cuts will be really tragic and dramatic for Miami-Dade,” Carvalho said.

But compared to districts elsewhere in the state, the decisions so far to save money in South Florida have not had a direct effect on students.

In Polk County, for example, teachers were ordered to teach an additional class a day — and take a pay cut for doing so.

In Orange and Santa Rosa counties, districts rearranged school hours, inconveniencing parents and causing a huge uproar, in order to avoid hiring additional bus drivers and buying buses.

Some districts have closed schools. Several districts are save on energy costs by eliminating work days when school is out, forcing employees to take the time off, even if it means unpaid leave.

“I’m willing to tighten my belt,” Joyner said. But, he said, in a state that pays the least per student of any in the country for education, he’s doing it because legislators are making a conscious choice. Read More from: bradenton.com

World Bank seek to bridge gaps with U.S. lawmakers

The World Bank and U.S. lawmakers, concerned with how Americans' tax dollars are being spent, launched a new forum on Wednesday to improve cooperation between the poverty-fighting institution and Congress.

The new bipartisan Caucus for Congressional-World Bank Dialogue hopes to deepen, and in some cases launch discussions between the bank and the U.S. Congress on development, poverty and trade issues.

Under World Bank rules, the bank's head and senior officials are barred from testifying before congressional committees and discussions are restricted to closed-door meetings.

"With the world changing at a rapid pace, this new caucus makes sense," said Rep. Kevin Brady, a Texas Republican who is co-chair of the new caucus.

Rep. Betty McCollum, a Minnesota Democrat, said global challenges like climate change, rising food prices and energy security needed more attention by the World Bank and Congress.

"Our executive branch is calling upon Congress to invest in the World Bank -- over $1 billion a year. As an investor, we must ask questions and should share our views with the leadership of the bank," McCollum said.

The launch of the caucus comes as U.S. policymakers are discussing ways to overhaul foreign assistance under the next administration.

Congressional hearings have long focused on the effectiveness of the World Bank in reducing global poverty and delved into how much of the bank's money is wasted on corruption.

Recently, several legislators sought assurances from the World Bank that it was not lending to Iran, which Washington accuses of seeking to develop nuclear bombs.

"Now more than ever the United States needs to focus on its international relationships and its international strategies, and focus on multilateral institutions that make a real difference," said Phil English, a Pennsylvania Republican.

"What is important about this caucus is it will cultivate a dialogue with the World Bank which will be important not only for making sure U.S. tax dollars are used most effectively but also for coordinating Congress' strategy in dealing with global poverty and promoting capitalism worldwide in creating a rising tide that lifts all boats."

World Bank President Robert Zoellick said with many pressing issues in the U.S. Congress "it is not surprising sometimes that the World Bank has had only periodic attention."

The Bank of Japan cut its economic growth forecast, raised its inflation estimate and kept its benchmark interest rate at 0.5 per cent, saying higher commodity prices are hurting the expansion.

The world's second-largest economy will grow 1.2 per cent in the year ending March 31, slower than the 1.5 per cent forecast on April 30, the central bank said. Consumer prices, excluding fresh food, will climb 1.8 per cent, more than the 1.1 per cent projected three months ago, it said.

Growth is "slowing further" because higher energy and raw materials costs are discouraging businesses and consumers from spending, the bank said.

Australians are the world's richest superannuation holders, thanks to a stronger domestic currency and the previous government allowing people to put as much as $1 million tax-free into their retirement savings, a report shows.

Australians had an average of $63,794 invested in managed funds at the end of the last financial year, the AFG Global Fund Management Index showed.
Local super funds, on average, outperformed their peers in a top-10 list that included the United States, Canada and France.
In the year to June 30, 2007, the amount managed by Australian managed funds grew by 32.4 per cent.

By comparison, the value of American managed funds climbed by 8.5 per cent to $43,458 and UK funds rose by 23.2 per cent to $17,515.

AFG Financial Planning dealer principal Ross Nayler said the stronger Australian dollar, now trading at around 90 US cents, and laws allowing people to put up to $1 million tax free into their super savings helped make Australia a world leader.
"One of the key messages is we've been at the top of the table for quite some time and we're getting further ahead," he said.

Australian managed funds, over the five years to the second quarter of 2007, posted per capita growth rates of 97.7 per cent.

But they was pipped by Swedish funds, which grew by 114.3 per cent to $24,567 and UK retirement savings -- which expanded by 105.2 per cent.

"Many children aren't getting enough sleep, and that lack of sleep may not only be making them moody or preventing them from being alert and ready to learn at school, it may also be leading to a higher risk of being overweight," said Dr. Julie Lumeng, primary author of the report.
In elementary school, children should be getting 10 to 12 hours of sleep a night, according to the National Sleep Foundation.
The findings were based on an analysis of sleep patterns and other data from a government survey of 785 children aged 9 to 12. Eighteen percent were overweight by the time they reached the sixth grade.
The 12-year-olds who slept less than nine hours a night were more likely to be overweight than those who slept more, and those who got less sleep at age 9 were more likely to be overweight three years later, the study found.
The impact of sleeping less was consistent regardless of gender, race, socioeconomic status or quality of the home environment.

About 40 percent of all cancers are linked to food, lack of exercise, and body weight, the organizations said in a 571-page report released yesterday. A panel of 21 researchers who compiled the report said it was the most comprehensive evaluation ever of evidence linking personal habits to cancer risk.

The findings are meant to guide future scientific research, cancer prevention education programs, and health policy around the world, panelists said.

"Part of the purpose of the report was to show that prevention of cancer by means of food, nutrition, and associated factors is as feasible and crucial as prevention of coronary heart disease," the researchers wrote. "The evidence that high body fatness and also physical inactivity are causes of a number of cancers, including common cancers, is particularly strong."

Hundreds of specialists evaluated more than 7,000 studies over five years to compile the report. Panelists found "convincing evidence" that carrying extra weight, particularly around the waist, may lead to cancer of the esophagus, pancreas, colon, kidney, and uterus, as well as postmenopausal breast cancer.

The panelists recommended keeping extra weight off, exercising at least 30 minutes a day, and limiting consumption of alcohol and high-fat foods, such as burgers, french fries, milk shakes, pastries, and sugary drinks. The guidelines also apply to cancer survivors, the report said.

Researchers said men should limit their alcohol intake to two drinks a day, and women one.

Red meat, such as beef, pork, and lamb, which are linked to colorectal cancer, should be replaced with poultry, fish, and eggs. Processed meats that include bacon and lunchmeat should also be avoided, researchers said.

Release of the report spurred some objections yesterday.

The causes of cancer are "extremely complex and involve factors like genetics, the environment, lifestyle, and a host of other issues," said Randy Huffman, vice president of scientific affairs at the Washington-based American Meat Institute, in a statement.

The Swiss and Dutch health care systems are suddenly all the rage in the United States. They have features similar to proposals by at least two presidential hopefuls, and next month the top U.S. health official will visit Switzerland and the Netherlands to take a look.

Health and Human Services Secretary Michael Leavitt will visit Switzerland on Nov. 7 and then fly to The Hague for two days. His schedule is filled with meetings with ministers and technocrats, hospital officials and insurance executives and patients and their advocates. His visit was scheduled, department officials said, because policy experts in Washington have promoted Swiss and Dutch provisions as models.

In Switzerland and the Netherlands, everyone has to obtain health insurance or pay a penalty. Employers are exempt from the mandates, and private insurers and hospitals provide care.

"We have been hearing a lot of people in the health policy community talk about how those two countries had been doing new things in health access, and the secretary wanted to get a closer look at what they're doing," a department official said.

The trip is not a sign, however, that the Bush administration is considering major health initiatives, officials said.

"We don't have anything cooking that we haven't announced," the department official said. "We would not endorse a system like the Netherlands or Switzerland's. But if there's something we could learn about their system, we should learn about it."

Other people, however, are endorsing the two countries' health systems.

The proposals of Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton and John Edwards, both of whom are seeking the Democratic nomination for the presidency, borrow heavily from the two countries. Mitt Romney's health care revisions when he was governor of Massachusetts were in part modeled on provisions in Switzerland, although Romney has not endorsed this approach as a candidate seeking the Republican presidential nomination.

The Healthy Americans Act, introduced by Senators Ron Wyden, an Oregon Democrat, and Robert Bennett, a Utah Republican, would largely adopt the Dutch model.

Wyden said the plan for Leavitt's trip was part of growing Republican support for proposals for universal health care through individual mandates and private providers.

"I think Mr. Leavitt's trip is a really positive development," Wyden said.

A spokeswoman for America's Health Insurance Plans, Susan Pisano, said she had been struck by Leavitt's timing. On Wednesday, Pisano's trade group will be the host of a luncheon at which Dutch and Swiss insurance executives will discuss the plans in Europe.

The event is meant to dispel the idea that every nation that provides universal health care does so through a government-run system.

"The only models we seem to focus on here are those in Canada and Great Britain, which both have government-run systems," Pisano said.

"We thought it made sense to look at two countries that have universal coverage but rely on the private sector to get there."

W. David Helms, president of AcademyHealth, a health policy research organization in Washington, said he met top Dutch health officials for several days this month in the Netherlands.

The Netherlands is a particularly good model for the United States, Helms said, because it has solved two basic problems: moving from an employer-based system to one in which individuals buy their own insurance and subsidizing care for the poor.

"I think the Netherlands is hot right now because a number of people are realizing that we need to go to an individual-based system instead of an employer-based one," he said.

President George W. Bush recently proposed eliminating the different tax treatment for employer-purchased and individually purchased health insurance by letting individuals buy insurance with pre-tax dollars.

Robert Blendon, a professor of health policy and political analysis at the Harvard School of Public Health, said interest in the Swiss and Dutch models had soared among policy experts because of a growing consensus that the United States would never adopt a single-payer system.

Much like it limited sales during the iPhone launch, the new policy is to ensure adequate iPhone inventory for a larger number of customers; it started Thursday, Apple spokeswoman Natalie Kerris told the publication. Before that there was no cash restriction and the purchase limit was five per person.

In late June, Apple also limited sales of the iPhone to two per person as launch supplies were limited, but soon after lifted that as the company ramped up production of the device and demand began to subside. Apple execs still expect to sell about 10 million iPhones in 2008, while some analyst predict as many as 45 million in 2009.

"Customer response to the iPhone has been off the charts, and limiting iPhone sales to two per customer helps us ensure that there are enough iPhones for people who are shopping for themselves or buying a gift," Kerris said. "We're requiring a credit or debit card for payment to discourage unauthorized resellers."

On Monday, the company announced that more than 1.4 million iPhones have been sold, but estimated that 250,000 were sold to unlockers -- those who modify the phones to work on networks other than AT&T, Apple's exclusive partner. No Shakespearean protagonist is more widely traveled, however, than Pericles, Prince of Tyre, the title character of a rarely produced fantasy romance. Though it is a fantastic -- literally -- yarn, one reason why "Pericles" is rarely produced is all the traveling that goes on in it.

The Penguin Books edition of the play begins with a map illustrating Pericles' voyages. During the course of eight extremely eventful voyages that take up 15 years, Pericles wanders back and forth between countries that are now known as Turkey, Libya, Syria, Greece and Lebanon.

Though he never quite gets to Arabia, his adventures and misadventures are like an "Arabian Nights" fable. If it's not one evil king, it's another. If it's not a perfect storm, it's a shipwreck off the coast of Africa. The interjection of pirates are the least of Pericles' problems. He loses his wife. He loses his daughter. Slavery and coerced prostitution increase the grimness quotient.

But, to cite a preposterous old saying, "When the need is greatest, so the answer comes soonest." Before the final curtain, and after the final voyage, "Pericles" concludes with the happiest of happy endings.

But the essential clarifying element in "Pericles" is a sort of master of ceremonies, a tour guide called "ancient Gower." To be exact, Gower was 278 years old when "Pericles" premiered in 1608. John Gower (1330-1408) wrote "The Lover's Confession," the poem on which Shakespeare's play is based.

At the beginning of "Pericles," Gower comes on stage to tell us what the story is about. Between scenes, Gower reappears to clarify details and tie up loose ends. In the Seattle Shakespeare Company production of "Pericles" that opens tonight, Gower is played by Philip Davidson. Though not ancient, Davidson, 66, is a man with lots of Shakespearean (and non-Shakespearean) stage experience. "It's an odd part to play," says Davidson. "You fill an essential function. But you don't interact with the other characters. You don't evolve.

"But I do get to interact in my other role, Cerimon, the physician." Davidson is a veteran of the Southern Oregon Shakespeare Festival in Ashland. "Here's an odd fact," he says. "Pericles was the first role I played in Ashland. That was 40 years ago. I was 26. At that time, the company was made up mostly of college students. So I was the old man, suitable for casting as 'ancient Gower.' "

After graduating from Wayne State University in Detroit with a master's of fine arts in acting, Davidson and his wife moved to San Francisco. Those were the summer-of-love days, when Northern California was one big hippie be-in. "My wife loved San Francisco, so that's why we went there. But it really wasn't a theater town back in the 1960s.

"My draft board was breathing down my neck. I had had a series of student deferments. But they expired and I was due to go to Vietnam. We were thinking about moving to Canada. But when I went to the Oakland induction center I was rejected -- high blood pressure.

"It's congenital. I've been taking medication for years.

"So where to work? I got a job teaching in Pendleton. That's where I learned about Ashland. I didn't even have to audition. I just sent some tapes and my résumé and I was hired. That was in 1967."

Davidson played 24 seasons at Ashland with time out in the middle for five years at the Alley Theatre in Houston. Eventually, however, Davidson got the news that ends many a career there. "A new artistic director (Libby Appel) told me that she had nothing for me," Davidson recalls. "That was eight years ago. At least our son and daughter got to grow up in that wonderful little town."

Now Davidson and his wife live in Edmonds. He takes acting jobs in theaters all over the country. Seattle audiences have seen him at the Children's Theatre, ACT, the Repertory Theatre, Intiman and Taproot.

Davidson has been spared shipwrecks and typhoons. But his life has been as peripatetic as Pericles'. And now, here he is after an eventful 40 years, playing Gower again.

Blood-based test capable of detecting individuals at risk for aneurysm disease

Yale scientists have discovered a way to use a simple blood test that may accurately detect thoracic aneurysm disease (TAA), which gives little warning and is almost always fatal if untreated.

The study, published this month in Public Library of Science (PLoS), represents the collaborative work of Yale School of Medicine, Applied Biosystems, and Celera Diagnostics.

TAAs occur in the part of the aorta that passes through the chest. They can become huge without causing symptoms. In fact, only one in 20 patients has symptoms before internal rupture occurs -- making advance detection key to treatment. Once the aneurysm ruptures, a person can go into shock and die from internal bleeding. Currently detection of these aneurysms is made by relatively expensive tests such as a chest X-ray or CT scan -- typically when a patient is being evaluated for other conditions.

"A standardized blood-based test capable of detecting individuals at risk for aneurysm disease would represent a major advance in clinical care," said John Elefteriades, M.D., section chief of cardiothoracic surgery. "This study indicates we may be able to develop such a test."

In this study Elefteriades and his colleagues took blood samples from 58 persons diagnosed with TAA disease and 36 spouses who did not have the disease. Using a gene expression profiling technology, they identified a 41-gene signature in blood cells that distinguishes TAA patients from those without the disease. The gene expression signature and the prediction model were identified using a complete workflow of instruments, reagents, and software from Applied Biosystems. These signature genes were further validated using TaqMan® real-time PCR assays. The accuracy rate in various analyses is 78 percent to 85 percent.

"It has become increasingly evident that the immune system plays a pivotal role in the development of aortic aneurysms," Elefteriades said. "We thus hypothesized that gene expression patterns in peripheral blood cells may reflect TAA disease status."

The next step, which the researchers say is underway, is validation in real-time clinical studies. The investigative team is also interested in determining if abdominal aneurysms share a similar RNA signature, and if the RNA can predict rupture or dissection of an aneurysm.

Higher risk of developing breast cancer

A woman who puts on weight throughout her adult years has a higher risk of developing breast cancer, compared to a woman who has maintained a constant weight, according to an article published in Archives of Internal Medicine (JAMA/Archives), October 22 issue. The researchers explain that this research was carried out among women who did not take hormone therapy after the menopause.

The authors explain that it is already known that an obese woman has a higher risk of developing breast cancer after her menopause, as estrogen may accumulate in fat tissue, increasing the potential for initiating or promoting the growth of cancerous cells in the breast.

Jiyoung Ahn, Ph.D., of the National Cancer Institute, Bethesda, Md., and team looked at information from 99,039 postmenopausal women who had taken part in the National Institutes of Health-AARP Diet and Health Study. Their body measurements, weight and ages 18, 25 and 50 were reported in 1996. The women were deemed to be either underweight, normal weight or overweight according to their BMI (body mass index).

By the end of 2000, 2,111 of them had developed breast cancer. For the women who did not have menopausal hormone therapy, gaining weight was linked to a raised risk of developing breast cancer for those aged 18-35, 35-50, and 50 to their current age (all three age groups), compared to women who maintained stable weights.

The authors explained "Because weight gain during adulthood mainly reflects the deposition of fat mass rather than lean body mass, weight gain potentially represents age-related metabolic change that may be important in breast cancer development. These findings may reinforce public health recommendations for the maintenance of a healthy weight throughout adulthood as a means of breast cancer prevention."

Fourteen- to 18-year-old adolescents are at an increased risk to initiate smoking when they start to work, according to researchers from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. Investigators found that adolescents who worked more than 10 hours per week also started smoking at an earlier age than their peers. The study authors recommend that the workplace be considered as a location for smoking prevention programs or policies. The study is published in the November issue of the American Journal of Public Health.

"Our findings highlight the importance of working on smoking behaviors of adolescents, which is an area that has not received much attention in current efforts to reduce youth smoking," said Rajeev Ramchand, lead author of the study. The research was completed while Ramchand was a doctoral candidate in the Bloomberg School's Department of Mental Health.

Using data from the Baltimore Prevention Intervention Research Center studies, the researchers analyzed work and smoking patterns of the study participants, 55 percent of whom were male and 85 percent, African-American. The adolescents have been followed since the first grade, so the study authors were able to review multiple years' worth of data.

During year 10 of the PIRC studies, 26 percent of the adolescents worked, and one year later, close to 40 percent were employed as babysitters, fast food restaurant staff, store clerks and in other retail positions. Tobacco use during this time increased from 13 percent at year 10 to 17 percent at year 11. Adolescents who worked during two consecutive study years and those who started to work during the 10th and 11th year of the PIRC study were more than three times more likely to report tobacco use initiation when compared to their nonworking peers.

Adolescents who worked more than 10 hours per week were 13 years old when they first smoked, adolescents who didn't work started smoking at 14, and adolescents who worked less than 10 hours each week started smoking at 15.

Other risk factors for smoking that the study authors examined were high levels of aggression in first grade, reduction in parent monitoring during late childhood and changes in affiliations with peers who used drugs.

The study results coordinate with the previously published precocious development theory, which states that adolescents seek out the rewarding aspects of adulthood ahead of their counterparts by assuming social roles and adultlike behaviors.

"There is a clear relationship between working for pay and adolescent tobacco use. Ensuring that adolescents work in smoke-free environments may be a promising way to prevent some kids from starting to smoke. However, more research is needed to systematically evaluate what features about the workplace, or about working, are most closely linked with adolescent smoking," said Ramchand, who is now an associate behavioral scientist with the RAND Corp.

Ramchand, Nicholas S. Ialongo and Howard D. Chilcoat, all with the Bloomberg School's Department of Mental Health at the time of the research, co-authored the study.

"The Role of Working for Pay on Adolescent Tobacco Use" was funded by grants from the National Institute on Drug Abuse and the National Institute of Mental Health.

A report released by the American Hospital Association (AHA) quantifies the toll common chronic conditions such as asthma, diabetes and hypertension take on American workers. These three chronic conditions cause working Americans to miss an estimated 164 million work days each year at a cost of $30 billion to employers. Of these three conditions, asthma takes the greatest toll.

"Millions of Americans are unnecessarily suffering from chronic conditions," said Rich Umbdenstock, AHA president and CEO. "One thing today's study demonstrates is the need to keep people feeling better - able to go on with their lives and work. We can manage chronic conditions. The message is clear, preventive medicine and wellness programs must be central to our health care system."

- For every 1,000 working Americans, an estimated 1,221 work days are lost each year due to asthma, diabetes and hypertension.

- Nationwide, asthma accounts for roughly 900 missed work days per 1,000 working Americans with the greatest impact in Rhode Island, Maine and Massachusetts where more than 1,200 work days were missed. South Carolina and Hawaii were least affected by asthma per 100 workers.

- Missed work days related to diabetes was highest in Mississippi and West Virginia while Colorado and Minnesota had the least diabetes related missed days. Nationwide, diabetes accounts for an estimated 112 days missed per 1,000 working Americans. The lost work time is estimated to cost employers $2.8 billion.

- In California, hypertension alone accounts for an estimated 2.8 million lost work days each year. Nationally, hypertension accounts for 200 days missed per 1,000 employees in the Southeast but fewer than 160 days missed in the North and Southwest.

HPV Vaccine : Protect againest HPV that is cause 90% of cervical cancers

A new study on Gardasil sponsored by Merck who manufacture the vaccine, suggests that it protects against more types of Human Papillomavirus (HPV) than at first thought and it now offers protection against strains of HPV that cause 90 per cent of cervical cancers.

The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved Gardasil last year as a new vaccine against cervical cancer and other diseases in females caused by HPV. This was on clinical evidence showing it protected against HPV 16 and HPV 18, that cause 70 per cent of cervical cancers, and HPV 6 and HPV 11, that cause 90 per cent of genital warts.

Now a new study of 11,000 girls and women aged from 15 to 26 found the vaccine to be 38 per cent effective against 10 further types of Human Papillomavirus (HPV) that are thought to cause 20 per cent of cervical cancers.

The research is the work of Dr Darren R Brown, professor of medicine, microbiology and immunology at Indiana University School of Medicine, Indianapolis, and colleagues. It was presented at a meeting of the American Society for Microbiology, reported WedMD News this week.

Brown conducted another study earlier this year where he showed that Gardasil was continuing to be nearly 100 per cent effective at preventing infection by HPV 16 and HPV 18 in its post market phase.

The new findings also show that Gardasil is 45 per cent effective against HPV types 45 and 31, also linked to cervical cancer, and it is 62 per cent at preventing precancerous lesions due to these two strains.
