China talking tough, to come up with anti-separatist laws

Recent riots in China seems to have shaken the Communist government. According to the police, women wearing long, black Islamic robes and head scarves acted as ringleaders in the July 5 ethnic unrest in western Xinjiang, state media reported Monday.

The top legislator from riot-hit Xinjiang has said that authorities would speed up local legislation against separatism in the western region that has a long-running independence movement by minority Uighurs. China already has a national law against secession, though there are no similar regional laws.

China faced its worst unrest in decades this month when tensions between the dominant Han Chinese and the Turkic-speaking, Muslim Uighurs descended into violence in the regional capital of Urumqi. Nearly 200 people died in the unrest.
Witnesses and surveillance footage captured the presence of young women wearing white, black, and brown robes with head scarves, along with young men in blue T-shirts, involved in the riot, with the women inciting the violence while the men carried it out.

According to reports, the violence began when police in Urumqi intervened at a peaceful protest by Uighurs, who went on a rampage, smashing windows, burning cars and beating Han Chinese. Two days later, vigilante groups of Han took to the streets and attacked Uighurs.

The Chinese government has blamed the July 5 riots on "three forces" — extremism, separatism, and terrorism — both at home and abroad.
Meanwhile terrorist group Al Qaeda is also reportedly planning to take revenge for the riots.

Kolkata Knight Riders At the last place in IPL beaten by Mumbai Indians

EAST LONDON, South Africa — J.P. Duminy hit 52 not out and fast bowler Zaheer Khan took 3-31 Friday to steer the Mumbai Indians to a nine-run win over the last-place Kolkata Knight Riders in the Indian Premier League.

Duminy smashed four sixes in 37 balls and helped lift Mumbai from 74-4 in the 12th over to 148-6 at Buffalo Park.

"I thought J.P. set it up for us nicely. If he didn't bat through to the end it would have been different," said Mumbai captain Sachin Tendulkar, who hit 34 off 30 balls.

Mumbai then restricted Kolkata to 139-6, with Khan bowling openers Sourav Ganguly and Chris Gayle in the first three overs.

The left-arm India seamer dismissed Ganguly for 0 on the fourth ball of the innings after the opener hit the ball onto his stumps. Gayle then bottom-edged a slower delivery from Khan 10 balls later, and Kolkata was 8-2.

Kolkata recovered after a third-wicket partnership of 89 between Brad Hodge (73) and Morne van Wyk (32). Hodge blasted five fours and three sixes in 60 balls, while Van Wyk hit three boundaries in 35 balls.

Van Wyk was caught by Duminy in the deep off medium-pacer Graham Napier to leave Kolkata on 97-3 in the 15th over. Laxmi Shukla was bowled by Khan after missing a full toss 22 runs and three overs later.

Hodge was dismissed in the 19th over, run out by Duminy's throw to wicketkeeper Pinal Shah.

Barbados National Anthem

In plenty and in time of need
When this fair land was young
Our brave forefathers sowed the seed
From which our pride is sprung,
A pride that makes no wanton boast
Of what it has withstood
That binds our hearts from coast to coast -
The pride of nationhood.

Chorus:
We loyal sons and daughters all
Do hereby make it known
These fields and hills beyond recall
Are now our very own.
We write our names on history's page
With expectations great,
Strict guardians of our heritage,
Firm craftsmen of our fate.
The Lord has been the people's guide
For past three hundred years.
With him still on the people's side
We have no doubts or fears.
Upward and onward we shall go,
Inspired, exulting, free,
And greater will our nation grow
In strength and unity.

IPL Twenty20 auction held in Goa - Pietersen and Flintoff won record contracts of $1.55 million each

Pietersen will play for Bangalore Royal Challengers and Flintoff for the Chennai Super Kings. In the first round, Chennai bid the highest, $1.5 million, for Mahendra Singh Dhoni, the Indian captain.

“I was prepared to pay up to $2 million for Kevin Pietersen,” Vijay Mallya, owner of the Bangalore team, said in Goa today. “It was a conscious decision and we wanted him.”

Teams will be allowed 10 overseas players this season, up from eight in the league’s first edition. The clubs could spend as much as $2 million and choose 17 from among the 43 available players. Australia’s Michael Clarke opted out, citing a busy schedule.

“With the inclusion of these new players, we are better equipped to be a match-winner,” N. Srinivasan, managing director of India Cements Ltd. and owner of the Chennai team. “Last year, we were plain unlucky.”

The owners and sponsors are betting the cricket-crazy nation, with a population of 1.2 billion, will at least help match last year’s earnings of $200 million. The organizers raised $1.8 billion from sponsors, television rights and franchise fees before a ball was bowled in 2008. Investors include Bollywood movie actors Shah Rukh Khan and Shilpa Shetty and billionaire Mukesh Ambani.

‘Defying Recession’

“The IPL has defied the recession,” said Lalit Modi, chairman of the Indian Premier League. “Looking at the crowd today and the interest when Shilpa Shetty bought the stake in Rajasthan Royals, it is apparent that these games will attract crowds and will be a success.”

The event runs from April 10 to May 29, with the top four teams advancing to the semifinals.

England team members will be playing for the first time this year. An agreement was reached last week that allows them to attend for a minimum of three weeks in 2009 and 2010.

Pakistan, which let 11 players to participate last year, won’t allow any in this year’s tournament because of security concerns, India.com reported, citing Saleem Altaf, chief operating officer of the Pakistan Cricket Board.

Shetty, Royals

Shetty and Raj Kundra, chief executive officer of Dubai- based Essential General Trading LLC, acquired 11.7 percent of the Rajasthan Royals team that won the league last year. Shetty and Kundra paid $15.4 million for the stake, valuing the team at $140 million, according to cricinfo.com.

This “has proved once again that it is a prudent investment opportunity even in these unprecedented times of global economic crises,” Modi said earlier this week.
